This week's feature is a classic by They Might Be Giants, a piece which combines hilarious lyrics with a catchy pop hook (as all good TMBG songs do).
And on Sunday, THIS will be the song playing in my heart when I cross that half-marathon finish line.
This week's song is by New Buffalo, a group I found out about through Shane's subscription to CMJ Magazine (they had a Beth Orton duet on their first album). This track was actually in the running for our first dance, but we ultimately decided it was probably too quirky for most of the crowd at our wedding.
Today's music brought to you courtesy of my beloved Friday Night Lights, which featured this song on last week's wonderful season (not series! woo again!) finale.
An indie tune today from the standout debut album of Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos.
Whenever March rolls around, I usually end up pulling out Beth Orton's Comfort of Strangers CD again. It was released around this time a few years ago, and I listened to it non-stop on my flight to Norway and back in 2006. (I actually heard one of the songs from this disc being played in a mall over there! I heart you, Norway.) The first single off the album - Conceived - is still one of my favourite Beth Orton songs, and the music video for it is pretty hilarious as well (the rabbit at the end kills me every time). Enjoy!
If you know anything about my musical tastes, you probably know I love good harmony. I'm not sure if it's part of my genetics or part of growing up with an endless background of Simon & Garfunkel, but I am a huge fan. This track is from the one and only album of now-defunct eastmountainsouth (a band I actually got to see live!) and falls in that category of irresistible harmonic loveliness for me.
I’ve been putting more MP3s on my computer this past week (mostly in preparation for transferring to my fancy new laptop next month), including tracks from Mika's album Life in Cartoon Motion. This disc defines the word poppy, and I think this song is a particularly good one for a Friday.
Last spring, Shane and I attended a concert where local formerly local indie band Kensington Prairie performed. I bought their debut album right after the show, so the music from that CD will forever be tied to this time of year. I've been listening to Captured in Still Life again this week, and here's a sampling of what this group sounds like.
The third volume of the Vancouver Sun's free music download (Seriously West Coast) was released on Valentine's Day. Here's one of the better tracks (in my opinion) from the new compilation.
